The Calumet Junior High School held its First Annual Fine Arts Festival in
June. Performing with skill and passion, the participants presented a yearend
activity of songs, dance, varied genres of art work and oratory, drum
cadences, and a Gallery Walk to an enthusiastic audience.
The Calumet Choral Ensemble sang songs ranging from Gershwin's
"Summertime" and Kurt Franklin's, "Imagine Me" to "Soul Medley". The
Calumet Drum Line performed drum Cadence "Calumet Pride" and "Hip
Hop". Students recited oratory selections with themes of self-respect,
including Malcom X's "The Ballot or the Bullet". The Dancers performed
an Indian Cinematic Dance "Om Shanti Om" choreographed by
Ms. Zachariah. An Acoustic Guitar Solo added much to the variety of the
Festival.
The Gallery Walk at the beginning of the program and during intermission
allowed the audience to meet the artists and view their creations. Students
described their works and marketed the items. The art could be purchased
and refreshments were served.
Art Instructor, Ms. Rima Zachariah and Music Instructor, Mr. Steven
Corley, coordinated the festival. Ms. Carole Collins Ayanlaja, Principal,
gave encouraging and congratulatory remarks to the students, parents, and
community members in attendance.
At the end of the program, the audience viewed a montage of pictures
created by Community Education Coordinator, Joyce Norman, reviewing
activities of the Calumet School year.
